Metrohm entered 2026 without a major platform refresh but with two moves that matter more to continuous-process customers than a headline product would. The Swiss instrument maker, wholly owned by the Metrohm Foundation, opened a 15,000-square-foot application and service facility in Houston in March, and its combustion ion chromatography (CIC) team supplied technical input to the new ISO 18127 method for adsorbable organically bound halogens in water. Both changes point at the same segment: petrochemicals, refining, chemicals, and utilities that run analytical loops around the clock rather than in campaign mode.
The process analytics portfolio itself - the 2060 Platform, the ADI 2045 process titrators, the 202X Heavy Duty analyzer line, and the ProcessLab robots - is unchanged in mid-2026. That in itself is the story for a companies-desk update: Metrohm’s stated posture this year is depth of application, not new hardware.
Houston facility targets Gulf Coast petrochemicals
Metrohm USA opened its Houston site on 24 March 2026. The company’s announcement puts the working footprint at roughly 15,000 sq ft, with full-time application chemists, a service depot with a 500-sq-ft staging area for process analyzers, and about 2,300 sq ft of expansion space. A solar array supplies close to 98% of the building’s electricity.
The location choice is the tell. Houston sits at the centre of the US Gulf Coast petrochemical corridor - the customer base for continuous IC on cooling-water halides, continuous titration on caustic scrubbers and amine loops, and continuous NIR on hydrocarbon streams. A local application lab reduces the round-trip time on method development from weeks to days and puts analyzer staging within trucking distance of the plants that would run them. It also signals that Metrohm is willing to spend on service depth in a segment where competitors - Endress+Hauser Process Solutions, Thermo Fisher’s process automation team, and ABB - already have field presence.
ISO 18127: standardising AOX/AOF by combustion IC
On 15 April, Metrohm announced that ISO 18127 had been published for the determination of adsorbable organically bound halogens - AOX, AOF, AOCl, AOBr, AOI - in water by combustion ion chromatography. The standard is built on Germany’s DIN 38409-59 and, per Metrohm, “both standards were developed with support from our Metrohm CIC experts.”
The methodological gap CIC fills is real. Legacy AOX methods (EN ISO 9562, US EPA 1650) use combustion followed by microcoulometric titration and report only lumped total AOX. CIC replaces the titration end-point with a suppressed anion IC step, so AOCl, AOBr, AOI, and (for AOF) fluoride are reported individually. For utilities dealing with PFAS - where AOF is the pragmatic screening quantity for organofluorines - and for petrochemical wastewater where AOBr and AOI complicate compliance under the EU’s Water Framework Directive, the speciation matters.
ISO 18127 does not force customers off legacy titration-only AOX analyzers. It does mean the greenfield choice for compliance labs shifts toward CIC, and it strengthens Metrohm’s positioning against the two other credible CIC vendors, Thermo Fisher (Dionex integrated combustion IC) and Mitsubishi Chemical Analytech.
The 2060 Platform and IMPACT: quiet spine
Metrohm’s process backbone since 2019 has been the 2060 Platform, a modular chassis that hosts IC, NIR, Raman, XRF, or titration cassettes and a single sample-conditioning system per analyzer. The IMPACT software layer - Intelligent Metrohm Process Analytics Control Technology - handles 24/7 orchestration, trend logging, alarm handling, and the DCS/PLC/SCADA handshake that continuous plants require.
Neither has been formally re-versioned in 2026. What has changed is the application catalogue: the Houston lab and the CIC standards work broaden the recipe library that IMPACT ships with, which is the practical value for a process customer choosing between Metrohm and, say, Endress+Hauser’s Raman Rxn line or Bruker’s Matrix-F. The competition on continuous plants is decided at the application-note level; hardware differences are second-order once IP66, ATEX, and DCS integration are all present.
Analytica and Pittcon 2026: the show posture
Metrohm exhibited at both major trade fairs of the year. At Analytica 2026 in Munich (24-27 March), the company took Hall A1 booths 101-102 and Hall B2 booth 331 under a “cloud and connectivity” banner - the messaging Metrohm has settled on for its process line since 2024. At Pittcon 2026 in San Antonio (7-11 March), Metrohm USA had booth 1426.
For anyone tracking whether the show cadence is producing new-product signals: this year, no. The launch cadence was heavier on the laboratory side (autosamplers, robotics) than on process, and Metrohm’s own recap materials treated 2026 as an application-and-standards year rather than a hardware year.
What it changes for continuous-process buyers
Three practical takeaways for chemicals, refining, and utilities buyers scoping analyzers this year. First, Metrohm remains the safest default when the measurement is titration-based online (acid-base, redox, KF moisture) or CIC-based; that has not changed. Second, the ISO 18127 publication is the small-print item that will move procurement toward CIC for greenfield AOX/AOF compliance loops - Metrohm and Thermo Fisher are both credible there. Third, if the plant is on the US Gulf Coast, the Houston facility shortens the service and application-development timeline enough to be a real cost-of-ownership consideration versus vendors with only distributor coverage in the region.
There is no new box to buy this year. There is a slightly stronger case for the boxes Metrohm already sells.
